Our guide to the scenic Kelvin Heights Peninsula

Welcome to Kelvin Heights a residential area, 5 minutes drive from Frankton and 20 minutes from the centre of Queenstown. With a world-class golf course, wonderful views of Lake Wakatipu and a greater share of the sunshine than many other areas in Queenstown, it’s also a popular spot for holiday homes. The 2 properties available are beautifully situated overlooking the lake with spectacular mountain views as an added bonus and so we have prepared this guide to Kelvin Heights just for you using the information we have gained for living here for over 20 years!

It’s very easy to relax and reconnect on the peninsula. The 2 properties available are beautifully situated overlooking the lake with spectacular mountain views as an added bonus.

Now that you are here, what can you do on the peninsula? Here is our guide to Kelvin Heights:

The Lakeside Trail

The Lakeside Trail starts in the heart of Kelvin Heights Peninsula tracing along the edge of Lake Wakatipu surrounded by historic farmlands and some of the most scenic residential areas New Zealand has to offer – a short day walk sure to reward even the most avid walkers. To be honest, this track and all the others in the area are excellent for cycling as well.

Best time to go: All year
Duration: 3.5-4hours return
Location: Jardine Park, Poplar Drive, Kelvin Heights – just a 3 minute walk from your accommodation
Start/finish point: Jardine Park
Difficulty: Easy to intermediate
Our Tip: Take water with you
Your reward? Enjoy a break at Jack’s Point clubhouse for lunch or a light refreshment before making you way back along the trail to Queenstown.

Kelvin Heights Sculpture Trail

This quick and easy loop is ideal for families or those who are relative strangers to cycling!

Distance: 3.5km
Duration: 1 hour
Easy walk or ride: Grade 2
Tip: watch out for golfers as they have right of way.

There are 4 sculptures and our favourite is Wakatipu Kuikui by artist Mark Hill, an impressive figure with wild hair blowing into the wind, soak up her energy as you pass and make your way on the track and into the forest.

Wakatipu Croquet

We are just a 5 minute walk to the croquet club which is seen as a mind game, requiring the combined skills of chess and pool – have a go!
